10 Ways to Decorate your Windows for Less

Being creative when covering your windows can save you big money! Here are 10 alternatives to traditional window coverings.

  1. Don’t use anything. In many of today’s modern homes, the lack of window dressing is preferred for a contemporary, open feel. If you have a great view and don’t have privacy or fading issues, show off that lovely woodwork!
  2. Add shutters to the wall on the sides of your window. Find shutters at a yard sale or make them yourself. Some shutter options are fabric inset frames, wood slat shutters, laced twigs, wood shelves, natural bark lumber, paper in a frame… only your imagination will limit you.
  3. Use pull down shades with a decorative edge and a fun pull. Add a small fabric valance above or make one with fabric over a padded wood cornice.
  4. Use scarves, napkins, handkerchiefs, netting, paper or tablecloths hung on the diagonal or swag just to one side instead of two.
  5. Use bamboo stakes from the garden center, a branch, golf club, broom, fishing pole or oar to hang your fabric on while adding to a themed room.
  6. Use leather laces, fabric, cording, raffia, wire, rope, twine or ribbon as tie backs and tabs laced through grommets.
  7. Hang curtains from hooks on the ceiling instead of a long pole.
  8. Hang curtains on short poles with finials on either side of the window for a decorative touch instead of having fabric block the window.
  9. Make a less expensive rod by adding a few inches of decorative pole and finials to a plain rod. The valance or drapery will cover the plain pole in the middle.
  10. Hang stained glass panels, architectural pieces, artwork or a screen in front of a window with a less than wonderful view. It will let the light in while obscuring the view.
