10 Ways to Decorate your Windows for
Less
Being creative when covering your
windows can save you big money! Here are 10 alternatives to traditional
window coverings.
- Don’t use anything. In many of
today’s modern homes, the lack of window dressing is preferred for
a contemporary, open feel. If you have a great view and don’t have
privacy or fading issues, show off that lovely woodwork!
- Add shutters
to the wall on the sides of your window. Find shutters at a yard
sale or make them yourself. Some shutter options are fabric inset
frames, wood slat shutters, laced twigs, wood shelves, natural bark
lumber, paper in a frame… only your imagination will limit you.
- Use pull down shades with a
decorative edge and a fun pull. Add a small fabric valance above or
make one with fabric over a padded wood cornice.
- Use scarves,
napkins, handkerchiefs, netting, paper or tablecloths hung on the
diagonal or swag just to one side instead of two.
- Use bamboo stakes from the garden
center, a branch, golf club, broom, fishing pole or oar to hang your
fabric on while adding to a themed room.
- Use leather laces, fabric, cording,
raffia, wire, rope, twine or ribbon as tie backs and tabs laced
through grommets.
- Hang
curtains from hooks on the ceiling instead of a long pole.
- Hang curtains on short poles with
finials on either side of the window for a decorative touch instead
of having fabric block the window.
- Make a less expensive rod by adding
a few inches of decorative pole and finials to a plain rod. The
valance or drapery will cover the plain pole in the middle.
- Hang stained glass panels,
architectural pieces, artwork or a screen in front of a window with
a less than wonderful view. It will let the light in while obscuring
the view.
