Not Enough Time? Everyone Wants a Piece
of You? Summary:
Not enough time? Everyone wants a piece of you? Volunteering is
such a big part of life these days. You want to do your part, but
don't do it at the expense of your dreams! You also want to be
loving, kind and helpful. Here are some ideas to
help you stay on track.
1) Learn to say
"no." If what someone is asking of you does not fit in with
your priorities, it is not something you should be doing. Explain to
them when you might be available at a future date, or what kinds of
things you would prefer to participate in. Everyone is busy and
understands when you say you just don't have the time.
2) Develop a time map.
Depending on how you like to work, make a daily or weekly time map.
Block out times to do certain types of activities that suit your goals.
For example, select Monday afternoons to help at school, Tuesday and
Thursday mornings to work out. Monday and Wednesday mornings to
de-clutter. Then when you are asked to do something, check your time map
and say, "I am free to work at the school on Monday afternoons,
does that work for you?" This will help you develop that routine
you are looking for.
3) Weed out
to-dos that
don't fit your priorities. Consider things carefully before taking them
on. You might be your own worst enemy, giving yourself assignments that
are not on your list. Don't pick up a library book on needlework if it
is not yet one of your priorities.
4) Keep your family
updated on your schedule. Post your time map on the refrigerator, in the
Family Information Center or in the Reminder Binder. You need their
support and understanding, too.
5) Be flexible when
needed. It's okay to trade time within a day or week on your time map.
Maybe you'll find that you don't like to leave the house early in the
morning, but prefer to run errands in the afternoon. If so, change
it !
And don't feel guilty if you skip something once in awhile. It is YOUR
decision how you spend your time. You have one life, so enjoy it!
